HHS to Delay ICD-10 Compliance Deadline to Oct. 2014 upon Approval of Proposed Rule

HIPAA 5010 Grace Period Extended Through June 30, 2012

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services’ Office of E-Health Standards and Services (OESS) announced a second 3-month grace period for HIPAA ASC X12 Version 5010 and NCPDP Versions D.0 and 3.0 on March 15, 2012, effectively extending the deadline for enforcement action against HIPAA 5010 noncompliance through June 30, 2012. Don’t take your foot off the gas just yet

CMS issued a statement yesterday that “HHS will initiate a process to postpone the date by which certain health care entities have to comply with International Classification of Diseases, 10th Edition diagnosis and procedure codes (ICD-10)” and also said that “HHS will announce a new compliance date moving forward.”

About the CMS HIPAA 5010 Compliance Grace Period

CMS announced a 90-day grace period for HIPAA 5010 compliance on Nov. 17, 2011. While CMS did not offer a deadline extension on the HIPAA 5010 compliance date of January 1, 2012, they will not “initiate enforcement action” before March 31, 2012. What does this mean?
