In a much anticipated announcement, HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius announced a proposed rule that will postpone the ICD-10 compliance deadline by one year, to Oct. 1, 2014. CMS issued a statement yesterday that “HHS will initiate a process to postpone the date by which certain health care entities have to comply with International Classification of Diseases, 10th Edition diagnosis and procedure codes (ICD-10)” and also said that “HHS will announce a new compliance date moving forward.”

CMS announced a 90-day grace period for HIPAA 5010 compliance on Nov. 17, 2011. While CMS did not offer a deadline extension on the HIPAA 5010 compliance date of January 1, 2012, they will not “initiate enforcement action” before March 31, 2012. What does this mean?
