The Weary Traveler: My Travel Magnet Collection

Tuesday, May 31st, 2011

I’d always dreamed of a job that allowed me to travel. So during my interview with HCIM, when they asked how I felt about traveling 80-100% of the time as a consultant, I said that I’d love to. I was surprised when they responded, “be careful what you wish for!”

I soon began collecting a magnet for every airport I flew through while traveling to client sites. Each time I’m assigned to a new project, I look forward to the new magnet that I can proudly display on my fridge. My work has taken me to places I thought I would never see and places that I would love to visit again.

I feel very fortunate to be a consultant with HCIM and I love working with fantastic clients and colleagues in such a challenging and rewarding industry. But I must admit, the excitement and novelty of flying wore off 23 airports, quite a few delays and hundreds of security screenings ago, but it sure beats driving!

My first project was in Seattle.

My next project took me to Pasadena, CA.

Then on to the fabulous Las Vegas.

My latest magnet is from Houston, TX.

My favorite magnet is from Milwaukee.

As you can see, I'm running out of space on my fridge!

For the Love of iPhone

Monday, January 3rd, 2011

I never expected a phone to change my life and I certainly never expected to fall in love with one. I must admit that I’ve had some pretty cool gadgets in my time, but the iPhone is by far the coolest thing I’ve ever owned. I knew that the iPhone was a high quality phone, but so was my Blackberry. But the apps I can oh-so-conveniently download on the iPhone make it the coolest toy I’ve ever “needed” for work.

With all the travel I do as a managed care/healthcare payer consultant for HCIM, I desperately needed something to keep me entertained on the plane and at the hotel (never at work, mind you). So here are my top three iPhone app picks for 2010:

Talking Tom features a tomcat that will repeat what you say, but with his own “special” voice. You can also poke him, causing him to double over in pain. After you inflict this pain on poor old Tom, simply pet him and he will purr your guilt away.

Blocked is a puzzle game where you slide blocks back and forth to clear a path for the blue block. While a little frustrating at times, the satisfaction that comes from freeing the blue block keeps me wanting more. I’m currently stuck on level 20 – has anyone out there passed it yet?

Plants vs. Zombies is my favorite app and is well worth the $2.99 download price. The object of the game is to keep the Zombies from breaking into your house and eating your brain. With the aid of special plants that shoot various things, you can kill (or re-kill?) the Zombies.

While HCIM has given me the iPhone to help me be more efficient at work, they have also helped to make my job a little more fun, too. On a tough day, blowing up a couple Zombies helps to melt the stress away and Talking Tom is always good for a laugh. I know there are tons of awesome apps out there that I haven’t had the pleasure of playing yet, so please post a comment to share your favorite stress-relieving app.

My Journey to becoming a Managed Care Consultant

Wednesday, August 18th, 2010

After graduating from college, I found myself thrown into the great unknown without a clue as to what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. Through an internship, I met a man who was married to the supervisor of a health network; her department had an opening for an Eligibility Analyst and I quickly made my entry into the health care world. I must admit that the Health Insurance industry found me, not the other way around.

Back in those days, doing eligibility meant that I would get printouts of members who were active that month and would sit for hours making tick marks on who was eligible and who wasn’t. I would then term those not on the list, add those who were, and make changes to those who needed updating. After a couple years of this (and rapidly diminishing eyesight), I was able to load eligibility electronically, which saved time so I could help out in other areas of the business as well.

As the claims volume grew, so did the need for a system that could process claims more efficiently. After the new claims system was purchased, I was chosen to be on the team involved in the conversion. During the kickoff meeting, I met four consultants who were hired to analyze our business process and advise the best approach to set up the new system. They knew everything about the system and were invaluable to the implementation. Those four consultants changed the course of my career, as I realized that I wanted to be a consultant so I could make a difference, too.

After over 12 years of Eligibility, Provider Maintenance and Provider Contracting, I took a leap of faith and joined HCIM as a Client Services Consultant. Now, I implement and configure claims management systems in addition to working on benefits, contracts, Providers, enrollment, fee schedules, and anything else that the client needs assistance with. Recently, a client was experiencing an abnormal amount of claims pending in the system, so I helped to determine the problem and recommended how to resolve the issue. I’m currently working on a project where the client is bringing up a new line of business.

I’ll be celebrating two years with HCIM this month and I must say that I couldn’t have found a better company to work for and I truly love what I do. I’ve found a career that challenges me and allows me to help people with the same frustrations that I used to have. I’ve come a long way and I have HCIM and those four consultants to thank for it.
